Demonic possession remains one of horror's most reliable sources of nightmare fuel. While trends come and go, there's something uniquely unsettling about the idea of an unseen evil force invading someone's life. Knowing that they are potentially lurking in the shadows, twisting reality, and turning the people we care about into something unrecognizable. It's a subgenre that continues to terrify audiences, and judging by its newly released trailer, "Lockbox" looks ready to deliver its own chilling take on supernatural horror.
The upcoming film comes from Daniel Stamm, the director behind "The Last Exorcism" and "Prey for the Devil," and follows Ellen, a grieving woman seeking a fresh start after the death of her mother. Hoping to find some peace, she relocates to a rural town and takes in her severely traumatized cousin, Winthrop. However, their fragile attempt at rebuilding their lives quickly begins to unravel when a troubled neighbor warns Ellen that Winthrop may be far more dangerous than he appears.
As strange and increasingly terrifying events begin to unfold, Ellen finds herself caught between protecting her cousin and confronting a sinister otherworldly entity determined to find him. The film's tagline, "Evil Wants Out," hints that whatever is hunting Winthrop may be connected to something far darker than anyone realizes.
Leading the cast is Carla Gugino, whose horror résumé includes "The Haunting of Hill House," "Gerald's Game," and "The Fall of the House of Usher." She's joined by Lou Taylor Pucci ("Evil Dead," "Touch Me") and Katharine Isabelle ("Ginger Snaps," "Backrooms"). Behind the scenes, the film is produced by Dark Castle Entertainment and Kearie Peak, with a screenplay by Soren Narnia and Justin Yoffe.
Personally, this trailer hooked me almost immediately. Rather than revealing every scare and plot point, it focuses on atmosphere, tension, and mystery. The imagery is unsettling, the performances look strong, and the trailer leaves just enough unanswered questions to make me want to see more. Plus, what a cast!! In an era where trailers often show far too much, it's refreshing to see one that understands the value of restraint.
Based on this first look, "Lockbox" is shaping up to be a supernatural horror film worth keeping an eye on. Horror fans can find out what happens when evil finally gets out when "Lockbox" arrives exclusively in theaters on July 3rd. Stay tuned for my full review.
